Chen Tai Ji – Cannon Fist,
or Paocui Workshops

Picture: Shifu Liu demonstrating Paocui at Birmingham SENI 2006

Laojia Er Lu or Pao Cui (Cannon Fist) is the 2nd traditional Chen form, Laojia Er Lu. It is more advanced than the slower, flowing Laojia Yi Lu and is characterised by vigorous movements, leaping, jumping and plenty of ‘fajin’ (explosive) movements carried out in a low stance. The Cannon Fist Routine is an important step and training method for more advanced martial practices like pushing hands and tai ji san shou and is an essential training before these are taught.

Shifu Liu will teach slowly with a high stance, step by step the complete routine over 2 weekends (8 hours), give some movement and posture correction and plenty of fajin (explosive energy) practice. These workshops are suitable for students who have tai ji experience, want to familiarise themselves with this challenging form and gain greater insight into the Chen family style.

Five Elements or Fists
of Xing Yi Quan

Shifu Liu will teach the third of the three major internal Chinese martial arts (the others being Tai Ji Quan and Bagua Zhang). The five fist form corresponds to the five organs and this helps to strengthen the organic body. The movements are characterised by strong linear movements and explosive power which will help the development and understanding of the ‘fajin’ power of Chen Tai Ji Quan.

This is the first time that Shifu Liu has taught Xing Yi Quan with the Tai Ji Circle and the workshop is suitable for everyone to try, from beginners to experienced students.
